All observations indicate that the evacuation of the city had been prepared a long time in advance, and therefore was possible to carry out at such short notice. The few objects that remained in the emptied houses gave the impression of having been left there purposely, rather than being forgotten. After a time, a rumour arose that these objects were not all that the departed had left behind. But it never proved possible either to confirm or to eliminated this suspicion.
